‘Revolt’ of Gen. Lucjan Żeligowski in the Polish press

The aim of the article is to analyse the way Gen. Żeligowski’s ‘mutiny’ in October 1920 was presented by selected Polish periodicals, taking into account the political and international context and the information strategies of the editors. A review of editions of the Polish press representing various political currents was carried out, analysing the manner in which events were described, the choice of terminology and reactions to the actions of the League of Nations and international opinion. The Polish press universally supported Żeligowski’s seizure of Vilnius, although they differed in their assessment of his ‘independence’ and the nature of the ‘revolt’. The patriotic dimension of the action was emphasised, but military insubordination was also criticised. International themes included the reactions of the League of Nations and Western diplomacy. A convergence of attitudes towards Żeligowski’s ‘mutiny’ was noted despite political differences. In the first, heated period of three weeks after the seizure of Vilnius, the Polish press focused on several themes, which are outlined in the article.
