„The eulogist of ecstasy” and „the Caliban of fantastic literature”. On the reception of Hanns Heinz Ewers’ literary work in interwar Poland

The article is devoted to an issue that has been little explored in literary studies so far: the popularity and critical reception of the German fantastic literature author Hanns Heinz Ewers in interwar Poland. The article is structured around the following issues: 1) an outline of Ewers’s work and his place in the Western fantastic literature tradition; 2) a structured summary of Polish-language editions of Ewers’s prose and a discussion of the prewar popularization of his works in Poland, with particular emphasis on the role of Stanisław Przybyszewski and theinitiative of the Lviv-based publishing house “Lektor” in this process; 3) a characterization of selected reception commentaries accompanying Polish editions of the German fantastic writer (S. Przybyszewski, S. Schayer, S. Grabiński).
