[Margarita Iwanowa Rudomino: creator of the great library]

The biography of Margarita Ivanovna Rudomino (1900-1990), the founder and for many years director of the Russian State Library for Foreign Literature in Moscow, is presented. The history and current state of this library are outlined, with an emphasis on books in the Polish language and the collection of rare publications. The role of the Russian State Library for Foreign Literature as an international cultural center is also reviewed. The Rudomino concept of modern libraries as unified and multifunctional educational and cultural institutions is described.
