Knowledge ecosystems as a research area in information science

Objective: This article aims to show the interrelationships between knowledge ecosystems and the field of information science research. Methodology: The article is written from the perspective of an information science researcher, which consists not only of the use of scientific literature (declarative knowledge), which is still modest in the proposed approach, but also of experience and intuition (procedural knowledge). Results: The concept of an ecosystem (including a knowledge ecosystem) is increasingly present in scientific literature in the field of social sciences. The theoretical and methodological contribution that information science currently makes to the development of research on knowledge ecosystems is presented. The latter is shown to be an area of importance for the future development of information science, giving rise to specific postulates and challenges. Conclusions: In light of the dynamic technological and social changes related to knowledge, further exploration and development of the concept of knowledge ecosystems are crucial conditions for maintaining the relevance and usefulness of information science in the near future and its growing social impact.
