Abstrakt

[The image of culture and literature in “Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny” (“The Illustrated Daily Courier”) in the years 1918-1939 (the results of a journalistic analysis)]

“Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny”, being a popular daily, displayed all the features of a social-political newspaper. The sensational nature of the news, typical of “IKC”, gave the newspaper the character of a popular tabloid. Gradually, the mainly political and social profile was diversified to include cultural and literary topics. The variety and richness of the materials published in “Kurier” satisfied the tastes of both sophisticated and common readers. It is especially visible in literary texts, theatre and music reviews and articles on fine arts, the cinema and physical culture. The prestige of those publications was even higher owing to their authors: recognized journalists, distinguished literary critics, poets, writers and scientists. The present article is an effect of a laborious journalistic research. It shows a consistent rise in the number of cultural publications in the newspaper in the period between the two World Wars. This conclusion must change the common but unjustified opinion, still presented in many works on the subject, that “Kurier” was exclusively a sensationalistic and “scandalmongering” newspaper. The research results presented in this article are a part of a wider analysis, published in the form of a book.
