The academic library as a 'third place'. The example of the Silesian University of Technology Library

Traditionally, academic libraries were perceived almost exclusively as spaces closely associated with learning and research conducted at the university in the context of using information sources. The use of tools that allow searching digital resources from anywhere has resulted in libraries becoming empty. The process of finding information and gathering the necessary literature could take place outside the walls of academic libraries; additionally, the installation of book vending machines and drop-off points has made it possible to serve readers using traditional books available for borrowing at hours convenient for the user. The modern digital transformation and the constantly changing needs of academic library users, which include students, university authorities and staff, as well as representatives of the university's environment, have compelled academic libraries to change their working methods and expand the range of services offered to users, which has influenced the perception of the role of libraries in the academic environment. Currently, this involves a conscious effort to also become a 'third place' within the university, with academic libraries becoming centers of intellectual and social life on the university campus map. The article attempts to analyze spatial organization in the context of implementing the 'third place' concept. Selected literature on the subject was analyzed, and based on it, the assumptions of the third place in relation to the spatial arrangement of academic libraries were presented. Additionally, using the example of the Library of the Silesian University of Technology, the practical implementation of the described functional assumptions was demonstrated.
